Background
The Interdisciplinary Mathematics Research Programme (PEPR Maths-Vives) aims to develop and strengthen links between mathematics and other scientific fields, particularly the life sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences. This programme is part of a multidisciplinary collaborative effort designed to address current scientific and societal challenges.
The aims of Maths-Vives are to encourage the integration of mathematics into other disciplines within the fields of:
By supporting multidisciplinary projects, the programme aims to stimulate research, train scientists at the intersection of disciplines, and contribute to scientific and technological innovation.
In April 2026, the Mathematics in Interaction Research Programme (PEPR Maths-Vives) launched a third call for short-term projects to fund two 36-month PhD contracts within the programme’s scientific scope, to commence in the 2026 academic year. Particular attention will be given to PhD projects falling within the scope of the cross-disciplinary ‘Émergence’ programme, aimed at developing new theories and methods that can be applied across the three main research areas.
Text of the call
- The supervisory team must comprise at least two scientists from two different disciplines, one of whom must be a mathematician.
- For applications under the Émergence programme, the project must have two coordinators, at least one of whom must be a mathematician. If the coordinators are all from the field of mathematics, they must come from different areas whose synergy will give rise to new applications capable of fulfilling the objectives of Maths-Vives.
- A candidate has already been identified to undertake the PhD.
- The PhD topic falls within the scientific scope of the programme, namely mathematics in interaction with the life sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences.
The application must be submitted online (https://plmsurvey.math.cnrs.fr/index.php/186282?lang=fr) and must include:
- An online form, including administrative details: thesis title, information about the candidate, thesis laboratory, doctoral school, and email addresses of the supervisory team and the unit’s administrative lead.
